Marsha Wichers: The beauty of a little imperfection | NETHERLANDS
How perfect does beauty need to be? For Leiden-based artist Marsha Wichers, this question runs through an intricate world of ceramic sculptures and jewellery. Delicate, richly detailed and touched by the exuberance of the Baroque, her pieces reward attention and occasionally reveal something stranger beneath their seductive surfaces.
An artist and cosmetic doctor, Marsha brings an unusual perspective to our desire for perfection and our attachment to what makes us individual. Working primarily in clay, she takes impressions of natural forms and assembles them into new creations, placing organic irregularities alongside smooth, polished surfaces. In her Vanitas series, birds, eggs, snakes and pearls become symbols through which she explores beauty, longing and the passing of time.
At The Winter Salon, we welcome Marsha’s intimate world, where sculpture has the intricacy of jewellery and jewellery takes on a sculptural presence. There is much to admire in the detail, and something quietly personal in the questions it raises about how we perceive and how we wish to be perceived.
